What Is the Jade Egg Practice?

The Jade Egg, also known as the Yoni Egg, is an ancient Taoist practice originating over 4,000 years ago in China. Traditionally used to cultivate health, vitality, and spiritual connection, the practice was reserved for queens and concubines in the royal palace. Today, it is recognized worldwide as a potent tool for improving pelvic floor strength, balancing sexual energy, and enhancing intimacy with oneself.

When it comes to your intimate health, it’s essential to choose the best materials. That's why I exclusively recommend Nephrite Jade or nonporous borosilicate glass eggs. These materials are strong, nonporous, and safe for internal use, ensuring both safety and balance during your practice.

    Why You Should Avoid Certain Materials:
    While there are many options on the market, it’s important to verify the egg’s authenticity. Many eggs are fake, chemically altered, or made from pressed stone chips, which can compromise your health and safety. Additionally, porous stones like rose quartz or amethyst can absorb bacteria and are harder to clean properly, which increases the risk of infections. Similarly, dyed or chemically treated stones may contain harmful substances that are unsafe for internal use.

    The Best Choice for Your Practice:
    Always look for certified Nephrite Jade to ensure you're getting the best quality and safety for your practice. By choosing a high-quality egg from a trusted source, you're making a safe and empowering choice for your health, intimacy, and personal growth.

  • Both options are valid, and the choice depends on your level of comfort and experience. I personally started with undrilled eggs, but over time, I’ve come to recommend drilled eggs, especially for beginners, as they allow for easier removal. Additionally, even for more experienced practitioners, a drilled egg provides more versatility, enabling exercises like weight training and resistance training, which can further enhance pelvic floor strength and awareness.

  • If you’re new to the practice, using a drilled egg with a string can provide reassurance and make removal easier. As you become more familiar with the practice and confident in your ability to release the egg naturally, you may choose to go without a string.

    For added convenience, Soul’n Soma offers a high-quality silk string, which is perfect for use with your Jade Egg. However, if you prefer, any unwaxed, unflavoured dental floss can also work effectively for easy removal and any resistance training.

  • If you do use a string, it’s recommended to use a fresh string each time for hygiene. Over time, you may feel comfortable allowing the egg to come out naturally – whether through movement, gentle pushing, or simply letting gravity do the work.

    Whichever option you choose, the most important thing is to find what feels best for your body and practice.

  • Proper hygiene is essential when using a Jade Egg. Follow these simple steps to ensure your egg is safe and clean for each use:

    Before First Use:

    • Boil the egg for 10 minutes in gently simmering water.

    • Make sure the water is not boiling too vigorously. High-quality jade can withstand heat, but lower-quality stones may crack.

    • Let the egg cool completely before handling or using it.

    After Each Use:

    • Immediately rinse the egg with warm water, paying extra attention to the drilled hole if applicable.

    • For extra hygiene, soak the egg in a glass of water with 10 drops of iodine or betadine, then rinse. This ensures full sanitization and is commonly used in medical settings.

    • Avoid using apple cider vinegar, as it may chemically react with jade and alter its surface.

    Do I Have to Boil the Egg Every Time?

    • Not necessarily! If you clean the egg properly after each use, washing it with warm water and mild, vaginal-friendly soap (or a toy cleaner) is sufficient.

    • If you prefer extra sanitation, (Anke’s preferred way) you can pour boiling water over the egg while you prepare for your practice – just be sure it has cooled before inserting.

    • It is recommended not to wear the egg for more than 4 hours to avoid bacterial buildup and unnecessary strain on the pelvic floor.

    • It is not recommended to sleep with the egg inside, as prolonged wear may lead to unnecessary pelvic tension.

  • Yes, it is generally safe to use the jade egg while having an IUD, but avoid practices involving weights training.

    Let Anke know if you have an IUD, alternative methods will be provided to keep it fully safe for you. However, if you’re unsure, it’s always best to consult your doctor to ensure your safety, as they are familiar with your specific IUD and can provide the most accurate guidance. Anke, even though she doesn’t have one now, practiced for years with an IUD without any issues.

  • Consistency is essential for achieving lasting transformation, but the frequency of practice is personal and adaptable. Even a few minutes of regular practice –whether daily, weekly, or at your own pace– can make a meaningful difference. Personally, I enjoy practicing weekly as part of my self-care routine. My aim is to help you establish a sustainable and personalized practice that aligns with your lifestyle and needs.

Safety and Precautions

The Jade Egg practice is highly versatile and adaptable to your needs. However, to ensure a safe and supportive experience, it’s important to follow these guidelines:

Who Can Practice

Anyone with a vulva, including cisgender women, trans men, and nonbinary individuals, can benefit from the Jade Egg practice. Whether you’re menstruating, postpartum, or in menopause, this practice can be tailored to support your unique journey.

When to Avoid Using the Jade Egg

  • Pregnancy – Insertion is not recommended during pregnancy, but you can still engage with the energetic aspects of the practice.

  • Active infections or STDs – Avoid insertion if you have an active yeast infection, bacterial infection, or outbreak of herpes or another STD. If you experience recurrent infections, you may still benefit from the energetic and movement-based aspects of Jade Egg coaching, without insertion. This allows you to engage with the practice safely while prioritizing healing.

  • Menstruation – During heavy flow days, consider skipping insertion and working with the energy of the practice instead. This allows you to stay fully engaged in Jade Egg rituals while honoring your body’s natural release process.

  • Pelvic health concerns – If you have prolapse, pelvic pain, or other medical conditions, consult with a healthcare professional before starting.

Jade Egg Use with an IUD

Jade Egg practice is generally safe for those with an IUD, as long as you avoid weight training, which could potentially shift the device. Let us know when you have an IUD, so we do not incorporate weight training, and we will provide alternative methods to ensure full safety. If you have any concerns, consult your doctor to determine what’s best for your specific IUD.

(Personal Note: I practiced with an IUD for years without any issues, but every body is different—your safety and comfort come first.)

Consent and Listening to Your Body

Even if you cannot insert the egg at a given time, you can still engage with the breathwork, movement, and visualization exercises to receive the benefits of the practice. The egg is an enhancer, not a requirement – your body’s consent, comfort, and safety are the priority. Learning to listen to and honor your body in this way is, in itself, a deep healing process.
